  1. Lane Chaplin says:

See the the thing is they put the name “Church” behind this, and the ignorant “Yes, Jesus is important, but Wal-Mart takes precedence” type of people go “Oh, look what these kids are doing for the Lord.” and remain oblivious to fact that if the word “Church” was removed from the header, this would look like no more than a worldly business. Now, though, they say, “Jesus, Church, or God” somewhere throughout and everyone assumes this comes from faith in Jesus Christ.

You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. They are of the world: therefore they speak of the world, and the world hears them. We are of God: he that knows God hears us; he that is not of God hears not us. By this we know the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.
    (1Jn 4:4-6)

  2. Stubo says:

I don’t get this picture. Can someone explain to me why the word ‘church’ is on there?

  3. They doubt God’s Word and are just trying to fill seats.

“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him.” (John 6:44)

  4. Joe C. says:

What would you suggest Christians do instead?

  5. Joe C. says:

Define preach per the Bible, and is that even what a ‘pastor’ is supposed to do anyways, according to the Bible? Preach what then?

I assume by preach then, you mean, preach the Word of God. An Atheist can do that though. Hitler did it. Billy Graham does it. Ghandi knew some of it and talked about it, preached it, whatever. Anyone can preach the Word of God….

So…what would you suggest Christians do? Because anyone can read from the Bible.

    There’s something missing here…..hmm.

    Joe

  6. Yes, there is something missing. The Holy Spirit. That is my point. Hitler can preach all he likes, but if God’s not causing the increase, there will be none.

The Father draws the sinner (John 6:44); The Father reveals the Son (Matthew 16:17); The Son reveals the Father (Matthew 11:27); The Spirit convicts the world (John 16:8); God grants repentance (2 Timothy 2:25; Acts 11:18); God grants faith (Ephesians 2:8; Philippians 1:29); God gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6) And we preach the Word (Mark 16:15; 1 Corinthians 1:21). No stunts required.

  7. Joe C. says:

I agree with everything you wrote, except when you said:

    “No stunts required”

By which you didn’t mean ‘stunts’, as much as ‘no creative effort on our part’.

Why do we live as an example of who Jesus is, say the things God wants us to say to hurting lost people, act a certain way, “in everyway… make the teaching of God our Savior attractive” (Titus 2:10), and let our light shine before men, if it does not mean anything or have any effect on the situation of the lost?

God’s Sovereignty is inclusive of using human beings in any way He sees fit to bring a person to Himself. That’s why Scripture tells us to be holistic in our understanding of the Character of God, so we can be like Him, and do the aforementioned things, in order to have a discernable effect on other people’s lives.

It is so much more that “We preach the Word”. If that’s all you’re doing for your neighbor, then you need to reconsider what God has called us to do, and why.

Well, I’m in a professional military school for the AF right now, and I have a super early morning and super long day tomorrow Ben, so I definitely have to get some sleep now. I’ll catch up with you tomorrow night.

    Joe

  8. Haha – In every way make it attractive?? “Exhort servants to be obedient unto their own masters, and to please them well in all things; not answering again; Not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.” (Titus 2:9-10)

And this includes luring people to church by promising them the best sex they’ll ever have? Right…

“For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe.” (1 Corinthians 1:21)

  9. Josh says:

Benjamin, if your ‘pastor’ got up every Sunday and just read a chapter out of the Bible and sent you home would you be okay with it? My guess is no.

That scripture is talking about a slave serving their master as if they were serving God.

According to 1 Cor. 1:21 it is right that the church should be talking about the best sex ever. Do you want them to seek man’s wisdom by seeing an atheistic sex therapist that tells them to indulge in lustful pornography? Couldn’t they use that service talking about the best sex ever to refute the knowledge of the world?

  10. JB says:

    Benjamin,
I think it’s sad that they’ve resorted to luring people with such a gaudy, distasteful, worldy ad. They could have approached the subject without the means that they used but they are accomplishing what they wanted…..drawing a crowd….not equipping the saints to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior.

    Keep up the great work….

  11. Stubo says:

Look, I’m feeling very stupid right now.

But I still don’t get it. What does sex have to do with church?

Can someone dumb it down for me? *blushes*

  12. I assume they are saying Christian sex is better than non-Christian sex, because God created it for a Christian purpose…

  13. Stubo says:

I thought that might have been it, but how ambiguous! What if people rocked up expecting to have sex at church? Hah!

But yeah, that’s going too far. It’d be fine to say in a talk or something, that sex within a Christian marriage is better, but to advertise it, especially so confusingly, isn’t cool.

I don’t know. I want to get away from the idea that sex is taboo. But I also know that flaunting it around everywhere is just as wrong. It all depends on how you approach the topic.
