Todd Friel, Ed Young & Hillsong Conference 2010

Charles Spurgeon | “Someone was asking, the other day, how it was that the church, nowadays, was not so separate from the world as it used to be; and one who heard the question suggested that, possibly, the world had grown better; but another more truly said that, probably, the church had grown worse.”

In this video Todd Friel comments on the promo video for Hillsong Conference 2010. I say, just compare it with the promo video for Ligonier Conference 2010 and it speaks for itself!

  1. Troy says:

I was at Hillsong Conference, and that video was not a promo for the conference. It was a funny video that Ed Young made and showed for fun before he started his message.

  2. Ben Davis says:

    Hi Troy,

It really doesn’t change anything if it was intended to show before or during the conference.

  3. Troy says:

    Hi Ben,

Here’s another video about the conference. Thought I’d share it with you.

    Thanks, Troy

  4. Ben Davis says:

    Hi Troy,

Thanks for the video. However, the issue is a little deeper than simply what they do with the money they make. If truth was simply determined by how much any person gives to charity, then Oprah’s doing better than most, if not all, Christian churches! But, I’m sure you don’t really believe that. The problem with organizations, such as Hillsong, is that they claim to be a Christian church. And the problem with that claim is that, according to the Bible, the Church is built on the Gospel preached by Jesus Christ and the Apostles. We know there is only one Gospel. And Paul emphatically warned that if anybody preached another Gospel, “let him be accursed” (Gal. 1:8-9). This video alone features a number of preachers whose Gospels fundamentally differ with the Bible and themselves. For example: In 2008 Hillsong publicly aligned themselves with the Roman Catholic Church, claiming to preach the very same gospel. Now, either Hillsong preaches the Roman Catholic error, or either one has compromised their message. I highly doubt it was Rome. And what about Joel Osteen, who said the differences between the Christian gospel and the Mormon gospel were just “little details” which he wasn’t to judge between. T.D. Jakes, on the other hand, is a Oneness Pentecostal, who teaches the sabellian heresy that there is no Trinity. Not to mention the various forms of the Word Faith heresy that’s usually found mixed within all of their strange teachings. That’s at least four fundamentally different versions of the gospel, Troy. And if Gal. 1:8 is true, then some of these men are accursed! And you’re defending them… Anyways, I hope this can clarify things a little for you.

  5. Hi Ben

Part of the lyrics of this ‘song’ condemn the ‘haters’ who dare to question anything. The Bible on the other hand tells us to ‘test all things’. I grieve over Hillsong promoting and endorsing men such as Joel Osteen, who seems to have only the vaguest notion of what the gospel is. You may well be branded by some as a ‘hater’ but keep raising issues that relate to the eternal and immutable gospel of Jesus Christ and Him crucified.

  6. Marty says:

It would be a shame if the ‘technicality’ that this video is not actually a promotion for the conference causes people to overlook everything that is wrong with it – have to agree with ben here

  7. Justin says:

“And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in real knowledge and all discernment..” Philippians 1:9

  8. Pat says:

“Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You shut the door of the kingdom of heaven in people’s faces. You yourselves do not enter, nor will you let those enter who are trying to…You blind guides! You strain out a gnat but swallow a camel. Matthew 23

As Hillsong continues to usher into the presence of the Lord for millions of people, you sit back and judge. How is judging from afar giving glory to God?

  9. Ben Davis says:

Do you realize that during Jesus’ day, most people would have responded to the verse you quoted by saying: “As the Pharisees continue to usher into the presence of the Lord for millions of people, you sit back and judge.”
