Beware of False Zeal

In ‘The Religious Affections,’ Jonathan Edwards explains that although a person might be zealously engaged in the external exercises of religion, so as to spend much time in them, it is no sure evidence of grace. In fact, such a disposition is found in many that have no grace at all…

1. Service
Isaiah 1:12-15 | “When you come to appear before me, who has required of you this trampling of my courts? [13] Bring no more vain offerings; incense is an abomination to me. New moon and Sabbath and the calling of convocations– I cannot endure iniquity and solemn assembly. [14] Your new moons and your appointed feasts my soul hates; they have become a burden to me; I am weary of bearing them. [15] When you spread out your hands, I will hide my eyes from you; even though you make many prayers, I will not listen; your hands are full of blood.

Isaiah 58:2 | Yet they seek me daily and delight to know my ways, as if they were a nation that did righteousness and did not forsake the judgment of their God; they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near to God.

2. Prayer
Mark 12:38, 40 | And in his teaching he said, “Beware of the scribes, who like to walk around in long robes… [40] who… for a pretence make long prayers…

3. Fasting
Isaiah 58:4 | Behold, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to hit with a wicked fist. Fasting like yours this day will not make your voice to be heard on high.

Luke 18:12 | “I fast twice a week…”

4. Charity
Luke 18:12 | “…I give tithes of all that I get.”

1 Corinthians 13:3 | If I give away all I have… but have not love, I gain nothing.

5. Sacrifice
1 Corinthians 13:3 | …if I deliver up my body to be burned, but have not love, I gain nothing.

6. Desire to Hear Good Preaching
Ezekiel 33:31-32 | And they come to you as people come, and they sit before you as my people, and they hear what you say but they will not do it; for with lustful talk in their mouths they act; their heart is set on their gain. [32] And behold, you are to them like one who sings lustful songs with a beautiful voice and plays well on an instrument, for they hear what you say, but they will not do it.

Mark 6:20 | …for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and he kept him safe. When he heard him, he was greatly perplexed, and yet he heard him gladly.

John 5:35 | [John the Baptist] was a burning and shining lamp, and you were willing to rejoice for a while in his light.

Mark 4:16-17 | And these are the ones sown on rocky ground: the ones who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy. [17] And they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately they fall away.

7. Evangelism
Matthew 23:15 | Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel across sea and land to make a single proselyte, and when he becomes a proselyte, you make him twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

8. Verbally Praising Jesus
Matthew 21:8-9 | Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. [9] And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!”

9. Singing Praises to God
Psalms 106:11-13 | And the waters covered their adversaries; not one of them was left. [12] Then they believed his words; they sang his praise. [13] But they soon forgot his works; they did not wait for his counsel.
